Pretoria
Skydiving Club to host the 2nd FAI World
Championships in Canopy Piloting
The
International Parachuting Commission
of the Fédération Aéronautique
Internationale (FAI) officially announced
on 28 January 2008 that the 2nd FAI
Canopy Piloting World Championships
will be held at the Pretoria Skydiving
Club from 19 to 23 November 2008. Training
will take place from 14 to 18 November
2008.
The
winning bid, supported by PASA and the
Aero Club, beat out bids from a number
of other countries around the world.
It’s
been 25 years since the last international
skydiving competition was held in South
Africa. The 3rd World Championships
in Relative Work were held at Sun City
in 1983 and before that, the World Cup
in Relative Work was held in Oudtshoorn
in 1976. It is quite fitting that the
man behind the latest bid, Peter Lawson,
represented South Africa at both those
events.
